• Continue planting bulbs until the ground freezes
  • It’s not too late to plant garlic
  • Force bulbs for indoor blooms in winter
  • Take notes and photos of last season’s garden – successes/failures, what to move or remove
  • Pour over catalogs and dream about what to plant/buy/mail order
  • Protect shrubs from critter damage (fencing, netting, repellents, etc)
  • Spray evergreens to protect them from sun scald
  • Mulch around plants prone to frost heave (fall-planted perennials, plants with crown at ground level (such as coral bells); boughs from discarded Christmas trees are ideal
  • Combat gardeners’ withdrawal by reading gardening books including our book for February discussion, Founding Gardeners
