Pruning

  • Prune summer bloomers such as Spirea and Buddleia before new flower buds form
  • Prune late blooming shrubs while still dormant
  • Cut back ornamental grasses when snow is gone and before new growth appears
  • Prune Lavender back hard to encourage new growth
  • Cut back Russian Sage leaving just 6-8 inches of woody stems

Fertilizing

  • Apply organic fertilizer as soon as you can work the ground
  • Apply chemical and time release fertilizer just before growth begins
  • Fertilize roses in mid-April

Lawn

  • In early Spring, apply corn gluten meal to lawn for weed control after snow disappears
    — 4-6 weeks before weeds sprout!

Planting

  • Plant Fall blooming bulbs
  • Divide Spring blooming perennials after blooming
